Giving Emotional Support
Just how long can you keep up the support without succumbing to the overwhelming emotions you’re feeling inside?
- Listen. But don’t just listen with your ears, listen with your heart. This is what it means to “really” listen to a person. You hear more than what they are actually saying; you “feel” what they’re saying. You feel their pain, their confusion, their sadness, and are therefore able to give them what they seek. You become a refugee because you do understand what they’re going through.
- Give your loved one “normal”. Your loved one doesn’t want you to be walking on eggshells around them. Even with the disease, they still want to be treated as normally as possible. Never deny a cancer patient any semblance of normalcy by tiptoeing around them or being overly sensitive to their feelings. For a lot of cancer patients, it would mean the world to them if you treated them exactly as you did before their illness.
- A little laughter can be lifesaving. Cancer is as serious as a situation can get. However, that doesn’t mean you don’t have time for laughter. Having a little laugh with your loved one every now and then may not necessarily cure them of cancer, but it will help them realize something: that life is still very much worth living.
Quality Urgent Care services in Florida can also be considered to provide cancer patients the support they need to live a meaningful life.
